Yes you read that right - Yappy Hour. Every Wednesday night during the summer months, for at least a year now, The
Liberty Hotel graciously opens "The Yard" to both four-legged friends and their owners for cocktail hour, and
Four Preppy Paws provides some dog friendly items. For those who don't know, The Yard is the patio area next to the outdoor seating at Scampo, between the hotel tower and the orignal Charles Street Jail building.
Yappy Hour is something I have been wanting to take Holly to for awhile now, but it never seemed to work out. For some reason, this week I decided we needed to go. Nick was NOT sold on the idea, but with a little convincing (they do serve alcohol) he was in. Yappy Hour technically runs from 5:30pm - 8:00pm, so we arrived at about 6:15pm not having a clue of what we were getting ourselves into.

Hanging with Holly having a beer |
When we arrived at the hotel we asked the valet how to get to The Yard and they directed us through the hotel (!) - turns out the Liberty is SUPER dog friendly, and no one gave us any looks as we paraded Holly up the escalator, through the lovely lobby and out towards The Yard. When we got to The Yard doors, we were completely taken aback by how crowded it was! There were lots of people, but also tons of dogs running around off-leash, having themselves a great time! Not sure how Holly was going to act, we kept her on the leash at first, grabbed ourselves a pitcher of beer and found ourselves a couple of seats.

So many people and dogs! |
All of the furniture in The Yard is hard plastic and totally dog friendly (as seen in the picture above)! While there are plenty of drinks for owners (and some food) there are also "muttinis" and "dogtails" available for the four legged ones. However, they are so busy running around and playing, the dogs are way more into the water bowls. The Yard is complete with a hose to continually fill the water bowls and to hose off the dogs when they get a little too hot! The staff working are more than friendly to both types, but they also have their pockets filled with treats when they want to make a friend.
Turns out, Nick and I had the shy girl in school - Holly was not really into all the playing. Instead, she clung to us, not wanting to venture too far.

Safety of Nick |
However, she did find some human neighbors who were more than willing to give her some treats just for being pretty. There were a bunch of non-dog owners who just came to enjoy the dogs. The whole crowd was there just having fun and playing with the dogs. As time wore on, the dogs got a bit tired and things calmed down, but still when a new dog came, they all jumped up to see who the new blood was.
Nick and I thoroughly enjoyed our first Yappy Hour and will totally be heading back over on another Wednesday. Hopefully Holly will get a bit braver next time and make some friends. If you have a dog or just want to have fun with other dogs you really should head on over!
I never knew the Liberty did this- I love it! I'm putting it on my to-do list immediately. PS- Holly is super cute :)
ReplyDeletethis is so cool! I have been to the Liberty a bunch but I guess only in the colder months since I seemed to have missed The Yard!
ReplyDeleteI have really been wanting to go to this, but I've been worried that Gunner would just want to run around all over the place. It sounds like that's more than okay though!
ReplyDeleteAwww yappy hour! So cute!
