For New Englanders, lobster rolls are serious business. Boston has a few restaurants known for their lobster rolls - like the ones at Neptune Oyster - but those can get pricey and require some waiting time. When friends (from Chicago, no less) recommended Alive and Kicking as some of the best they have ever had, Nick and I knew we had to get over there.
Alive and Kicking is located in Cambridgeport, about a 10 minute walk from Central Square. On one of the first lovely, warm spring days, Nick and I walked over to a seemingly residential area where the fish market/restaurant is tucked away. Outside there are plenty of picnic tables, both out in the sunshine and covered in case of rain or cold weather.

Row 34
When word got out that the folks behind Island Creek Oyster Bar were opening a new restaurant in the Fort Point area, we definitely paid attention. Upon opening, Row 34 was consistently packed, and getting reservations were a bit difficult to come by. So, on a random Tuesday night, Nick and I went over for an early dinner.
The space is nice and open, with lofted ceilings and an industrial mix of wood and metal. I decided to start the evening with a glass of bubbly - it turns out that the wine buyer is big into sparkling wines, so Row 34 has a great collection with plenty of options by the glass and bottle. Nick went with one of the draft brews from the extensive beer list.

Southie Day - Sullivan's and Harpoon
We recently had some out-of-towners come for a visit. Lobster rolls were on their list of Boston things to try, so Nick brought them to Neptune Oyster their first day for lunch, but I thought a fun activity would be a trip to Sullivan's on Castle Island where we could grab lunch and tour around the island itself. This way, we made sure they got to try all sorts of New England classics (including more lobster rolls). Since I had never been, I was also excited to play tourist in my own city.

Pier 6 at the Navy Yard
When Nick and I were about to move to Charlestown, I was excited to have Tavern on the Water in our back yard. However, that dream ended abruptly when the bar closed shortly before moving day. I know it had issues, but the views of Boston's waterfront are some of the best in the city. When I heard that Charles Larner of Mija Cantina decided to buy and gut the place, I couldn't have been happier. After watching the progress all summer, the space was finally transformed at the end of August into the new Pier 6.

Lunch at B&G Oysters
After all of the wedding celebrations and I had finally returned to work, my co-workers decided to continue the celebration with a lovely ladies-who-lunch style outing. When given a list of amazing choices, B&G Oysters stood out, and I jumped at the chance to go back after having an amazing dinner there over a year a go.
B&G Oysters is tucked into a garden level corner brownstone in the South End. While the restaurant is below ground, the bright blue and stainless interior make it feel bright and vibrant. There are only a few high tops surrounding the massive bar, with loads of seats that have a perfect view of the raw bar and kitchen so you can watch the chefs in action.

Island Creek Oyster Bar and a Red Sox Game
During my brother's trip we managed to hit some good New England trademarks: lobsters, and Back Bay/Sonsie. All we needed was a little baseball! Due to a number of circumstances, my brother and BL ended up with tickets to the afternoon game of a double-header, but since it was a weekday, Nick and I really couldn't cut work and go. Lucky for us, Nick was able to get four tickets to the evening game as well! Good thing my brother happens to be the biggest Red Sox fan ever!
Wanting to grab some dinner before the evening game and also wanting a good place to meet, we decided to head to the Island Creek Oyster Bar. I had been wanting to try this place out for awhile and this proved to be the perfect time!
When I walked in, I was greeted by a light cottage feel that had a modern flair, making me feel far away from downtown. After checking out the raw bar...

A trip to Neptune Oyster - not the tourist trap I thought it was...
On Saturday of the long 4th of July weekend, Nick and I headed over to the North End to browse the shops and grab lunch. Once we were over there it dawned on us that we could finally try the famous lobster roll at Neptune Oyster! While I believed the food would be good (it is, after all, on every "best of" list for their seafood) I thought the ambiance would leave something to be desired. However, rather than a Disney-fied fish restaurant, we were welcomed by a small restaurant that just a had quaint old world feel, with punched tin ceilings, dark wood, white subway tiles and long marble surfaces - the perfect New England feel. Since it is such a small space, we put our name on the list and continued to run the errands (I had a Rue La La coupon for In-jean-ius!). As luck would have it, just as we were finishing up, we got a call that they were ready for us.
Grabbing seats at the bar and wanting to make sure we enjoyed the afternoon to the fullest we ordered some drinks. I went with a Geary's Summer Ale, which was fantastic and delicious to the point where later that weekend we special ordered it from our local liquor store.
When you walk into the restaurant you are immediately drawn to the rather impressive raw bar, so of course we had to indulge.
