Last week after going more than a bit too long without seeing some good friends, KT and RT, we made plans to get our bowl on at
King's.

At King's |
Having been there a few times before I knew we would run into issues with the wait time, but I thought at 6:00pm we would be OK, or at the most would have a short wait time. So when I called at 5:30 and heard the current wait time was 100-200 minutes, I got worried (they do not take names over the phone). I tried calling
Lucky Strike, but no one ever actually answered the phone, so we decided to take our chances. However rather than a leisurely stroll down Newbury, we jumped in a cab and went straight there where we were hit with a 200 - 400 minute wait! Rather than having a good time bowling, we settled on down for dinner.
While not exactly excited to eat, we ordered some food. First up, the blue cheese and bacon burger with grilled onions. I did not order this meal, but definitely needed to give it a proper tasting!

The Burger |
I was pleasantly surprised by this burger - it was well cooked and juicy. The blue cheese and bacon offered up a nice change-up in taste. I prefer different toppings on my burger, but I would recommend this if someone was going to eat at Kings.
The next two plates were wrap sandwiches...
|
Buffalo chicken wrap with lettuce, tomato, jack cheese & blue cheese |
|
Grilled chicken California club wrap with tomato, lettuce, cheddar, bacon & ranch |
Both of these sandwiches were good. The french fries were great - I reached over and stole a few.
Since I was planning on just appetizers and I find it difficult to change gears completely, I went with the nachos with
jalapenos, cheese, salsa, sour cream and guacamole.
|
The nachos |
The nachos were really only OK. One of my pet peeves with nachos is fake liquid cheese, and these were covered in it. I really had to look for the actual baked cheese - it was in there, but buried. I will give them credit for the amount of guacamole, since there was no skimping in that department.
After a couple of pitchers and still waiting it out, we saw a group order a Big Bowl, which we thought would be a good idea. We went with the Electric Margarita at the suggestion of our server.
|
Tequila, Triple Sec, Blue Curacao, Orange Khaos Monster, lime juice, sour mix, and gummi worms |
Yes, there are really two gummi worms floating at the top of that bowl. The drink was good but a bit sweet. Definitely not for the faint of heart (or alcohol for that matter!)
Finally after we were done with dinner we did have some time before bowling. All in all it took about 3 hours to finally get a lane, and then because its peak time they only allow you to bowl 2 games, which takes all of a half hour to 45 mins. I would not plan on this activity for a Saturday evening again unless you were starting at 4:00pm. The other issue was that I think there were a couple of parties planned for that night, so when we arrived there were about six lanes that were not in use, which backed up everything up.
All in all, the food at Kings is OK, but really you get stuck eating there because you have to wait so long for lanes. Then, just as you get warmed up, you are cut off...I would stick to the weeknights or afternoons if possible.
I can't believe the wait is that long! I have been to both a few times and never remember it being more than 30 minutes, if that. crazy! I love the gummy worms on that drink!
ReplyDeleteI had to wait 90 minutes the last time I went and them only allowing you to bowl 2 strings is REALLY annoying. I would probably never go there again unless it was 2pm on a weekday to be honest. And the food isn't anything to write home about either.
ReplyDeleteI don't like that fake cheese either... but I would be pleased with the guac too. I must have heaping quantities of guac with nachos!
ReplyDeleteFake cheese is awful-esp when waiting an insanely long time for a lane! Fun fact-I once bowled into someone elses lane at Kings-and scored them a gutter ball. So sad...
