Whenever you hear people talk about pizza in Boston there are three places that come to mind:
Upper Crust,
Pizzeria Reginas and
Santarpio's. I have more than frequented the first two but somehow had never been to Santarpio's, even though I grew up north of Boston and have lived in Boston for over 5 years. Nick and I have said on many a trip home from the airport that we should stop, but never had before. Finally, Nick was coming from a business trip on a Friday night, so we decided to make a date of it and meet at the famous East Boston spot.

I had no idea what to expect when I arrived at Santarpio's and was waiting for Nick to arrive. For some reason I just figured it was a place that was mostly take-out with a few chairs. When Nick came and saw me waiting outside, he was very confused - turns out the restaurant is pretty big, nothing fancy but had loads of people chowing down on some delicious looking pizza, and I should have put our name in! After sitting down and ordering some diet cokes (big night!) we looked over the menu.

The menu is pretty straight forward, with a number of different set combinations of pizza toppings: pepperoni, hot peppers, olives, mushrooms, sausage, peppers, onions and anchovies. While some BBQ items exist, I had to have the pizza - it was the reason for the trip! Nick wanted to get something more adventurous with the hot peppers, but that is just not my scene at all, so we went basic - pepperoni and mushroom.
Watching all the pizzas coming out of the kitchen was getting excited. They all looked piping hot and delicious. When our pizza came to our table, the first thing you notice is the toppings are not scattered on top, but rather underneath the cheese. Then you notice is the cheese and crust look like they have a bit of a char to them that makes for a good crunch to each bite. This crisp worked so well with the super melted cheese, with that perfect bit of grease that you want on some good pizza!

Nick and I walked out of Santarpio's after having a great dinner and with a bill that was under $20, which often feels impossible to find in Boston! With its great prices, fun atmosphere, and delicious pizza, Santarpio's is a great Boston institution.

ReplyDeleteShe's not kidding about the wait for a table even on weeknights! I have to walk by the place every night on my way to the gym and the smell from their intensely concentrated, garlicky tomato sauce basically knocks you down when you turn the corner onto Border Street.

I've actually never tried Santarpio's! Lately I have been obsessed with Otto Pizza in Harvard Square. (and by lately, I mean ever since they opened) :)
ReplyDeleteI have never been here, and that needs to change. I just posted about Galleria Umberto on TM - definitely one of my north end favorites. I also love Regina, Antico Forno, and Enesto's.

ReplyDeleteOh my gosh, I love Santarpios. I don't even know what I love about it because it's not the type of pizza I usually go for. All I know is that the cheese pizza with hot peppers is worth going back for over and over again. I try to make a stop whenever I pick up friends from the airport.
